Samuel S. Stanley

CHIEF ACTUARY & CONSULTANT

Sam Stanley is a senior consulting actuary who specializes in multiemployer pension plans, and who currently works exclusively in this important field. His current exclusive responsibility is to provide senior-level actuarial and consulting services to major multiemployer pension clients. Sam has more than 40 years of experience in the actuarial field, including more than 35 years of experience as plan actuary and consultant to multiemployer pension plans of all sizes. Prior to starting his own consulting firm, S3 Consultants, LLC., Sam was a Senior Vice President for Aon Consulting, and head and founder of Aon's Detroit Retirement Practice. While at Aon, Sam built Aon's Detroit multiemployer pension practice to be the largest in the firm, he chaired Aon's National Multiemployer Practice Committee and he represented Aon on the American Academy of Actuaries Multiemployer Task Force. Following Aon's decision to sell all its multiemployer business to The Segal Company, Sam was asked to join The Segal Company as a Senior Vice President and to head up its new Detroit office. In 2011, Sam left The Segal Company to start his own consulting firm, S3 Consultants, LLC. Sam believes strongly that each client's needs are unique, and deserve individualized solutions, delivered in a client focused manner, using state-of-the-art methodologies. He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, an Enrolled Actuary under ERISA, and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries. Sam has been published three times in the Journal of Pension Benefits and has spoken frequently at major professional meetings.


Michael J. Strome

SENIOR ACTUARY & CONSULTANT

Michael Strome is a very experienced, senior consulting actuary who brings extensive multiemployer experience to the clients of S3 Consultants, LLC. Michael has worked closely with Taft-Hartley boards on numerous projects, and on many different multiemployer retirement plan designs, including cash balance designs, variable annuity designs, and traditional designs of all stripes. Michael has performed numerous second opinions and actuarial reviews, and among his many talents, is an expert at evaluating estimates and constructing long-term funding projections. As such, Michael has helped numerous multiemployer plan sponsors navigate difficult and complex issues with respect to their Plans.

Michael has over 25 years of consulting experience working for both large and small consulting firms. After starring his career with PwC, he has held senior consulting positions at Watkins Ross, Aon Hewitt, and Buck Consultants. In addition to starting his own consulting firm several years ago, Strome Actuarial Services, LLC, Michael adds significant senior actuarial and consulting depth to the S3 Consutants, LLC team.

Michael’s breadth of experience with both single employer and multi-employer plans brings diverse experience to help his multiemployer clients with complex plan design and risk management issues affecting all types of defined benefit arrangements.

Michael is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, an Enrolled Actuary under ERISA, a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries and a Fellow of the Conference of Consulting Actuaries.

eMILY kING

ACTUARY & CONSULTANT


Emily King is an experienced actuary with single employer and multiemployer pension funds. Emily has served as project manager for a wide variety of multiemployer clients, preparing actuarial valuations, complex data analysis, long term funding projections, and many other very complex multiemployer actuarial projects. Emily is very experienced with multiemployer designs of all kinds, including cash balance, variable annuity, and traditional designs, including lump sum plans. Emily is especially expert at preparing the software that S3 Consultants provides to it's clients to themselves model future funding scenarios on the fly: the IPM System Interactive Projection Model. Emily has also vast personal experience performing detailed longitudinal experience studies, benefits benchmarking, and a variety of other special projects. In addition, she is experienced in performing regular valuation work, administration, and plan design projects. Emily is an expert at the latest in actuarial computer technology, including extensive and deep expertise with the ProVal Valuation System, and the most advanced capabilities of Microsoft Excel.


Previously a consultant for Aon Hewitt in Southfield Michigan and Boston, Massachusetts, Emily received a B.A. in mathematics from Grinnell College. She is an Associate of the Society of Actuaries, a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries, and a Fellow of the Conference of Consulting Actuaries.
